Introduction
The admin manual for Centaur® Data Platform is crafted exclusively for business and technical users. This document is designed to provide comprehensive guidance on navigating and leveraging the administrative functionalities of the platform.
About FHIR
The FHIR standard defines how healthcare information can be exchanged between different systems regardless of how it is stored in those systems. It allows healthcare information, including clinical and administrative data, to be available securely to those who have a need to access it, and to those who have the right to do so for the benefit of a patient receiving care. The standards development organization HL7™ (Health Level Seven) uses a collaborative approach to develop and upgrade FHIR (HL7™-FHIR). FHIR is built upon the concept of “resources” – the basic units of interoperability which are used as building blocks that can be incorporated into existing systems to try to resolve clinical, administrative, and infrastructural problems in healthcare.
FHIR is based on internet standards commonly used outside of healthcare by various industries. These include the Representational State Transfer (REST) approach, which explains how to exchange individual information packets (called resources) easily. Resources are the nouns of the Web - they describe any object, document, or thing that you may need to store or send to other services (systems).
Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources (FHIR) is a standard for healthcare data exchange that is published by HL7™ (www.hl7.org/fhir/).
Centaur® Data Platform Overview
Centaur® Data Platform is offered as a platform-as-a-service (PaaS) that converts clinical and claims data from various sources and formats like Health Information Exchanges (HIE), Enterprise Data Warehouse (EDW), Core Administrative Claims Processing Engines, Electronic Health Records (EMRs) into FHIR. Centaur® Data Platform is the single platform through which Health Plans can establish connectivity with internal and external data sources to ingest, curate, convert and monitor data integrity from source to destination. FHIR data generated by Centaur® Data Platform can be utilized by different teams such as Risk Adjustment, Utilization Management, FHIR-based Interoperability APIs, Quality Analytics, etc.
Centaur® Data Platform Release v1 supports the HL7™ FHIR specification version R4 (4.0.1), covering all data elements from USCDI V1-V3. Centaur ® Data Platform is built with a container architecture, which can be deployed in a Health Plan’s public cloud infrastructure. This deployment architecture helps Health Plans maintain data control and eliminate data hops, thus reducing operational costs. The current release of Centaur® Data Platform integrates with the following FHIR servers; Azure Health Data Services, Azure API for FHIR, and HAPI FHIR servers.
Platform Features
Centaur® Data Platform ingests and supports the interfaces mentioned below:

- FHIR
Core Features
Centaur® Data Platform includes the following features:
HL7™ Engine - Routing, Transformation, Processing and Validation
The HL7™ Engine component routes, transforms, processes, and validates HL7™ messages like ADT, ORU, ORM, etc. The engine provides a few primary functions: the HL7™ router, which routes the messages through the MLLP protocol; the HL7™ Engine Processor, which is the entry point for the HL7™ message; and the HL7™ Validator, which validates the messages and ensures they comply with HL7™ specifications.
Convertor
Centaur® Data Platform's Convertor orchestrates the mapping of CCDA, CSV, HL7™ messages, JSON, etc., to the FHIR R4 specification, incorporating essential identifiers for diverse FHIR resources.
Implementation Guide (IG) Validator
Centaur® Data Platform's Implementation Guide (IG) validation systematically evaluates the source data against the IG and FHIR specifications. This meticulous process ascertains the IG's strict adherence to FHIR standards, thereby fostering seamless interoperability with other systems built on the FHIR foundation.
Curator
Centaur® Data Platform's curation process involves identifying and removing duplicate resources within a data. This process is essential to ensure data accuracy and avoid data redundancy, creating accurate and reliable longitudinal member records.
EMPI Processor
Centaur® Data Platform's EMPI process ensures that the Patient, Practitioner, and Organization data is unique throughout the platform. The EMPI processor keeps track of the Patient/Practitioner/Organization data and ensures uniqueness using Fuzzy Matching. The fuzzy logic includes mainly three algorithms: Phonetic, Similarity, and Distance matching, which ensure there is no duplication of data.
Reference Handler
Centaur® Data Platform's Reference Handler facilitates the resolution of references among resources. This essential component ensures the accurate resolution of references and proficient management of resource dependencies.
Retry Reference Handler
Centaur® Data Platform's Retry Reference enables the FHIR server to reattempt the resolution of previously unresolved references. This capability proves invaluable in scenarios where the referenced resource is temporarily inaccessible or has been deleted, showcasing the adaptability in handling dynamic data situations.
FHIR Data Ingestor
Centaur® Data Platform automatically ingests all converted source data from various formats into an FHIR server, facilitating their consumption for downstream use cases. This component also prevents the creation of duplicate FHIR resources in the FHIR server.
Data Observability Dashboard
Centaur® Data Platform’s Data Observability Dashboard offers comprehensive visibility into data processing metrics, tracking data points from source to destination. This dashboard meticulously showcases errors at each data processing stage, including the HL7 Engine, Centaur® Core, and ultimately the FHIR Server.
Management Portal
Centaur® Data Platform v1 includes a management portal that provides platform configuration, management, and monitoring. This interface allows users to review source connector configurations, access reporting and error analytics across platform components, and quickly navigate to the platform's data observability dashboard.
